This blog on New Caledonia is for those of you who ever wondered what life on a tiny island in the South Pacific might be like. Tired of bracing winter winds, the stress of an inner city or simply dreaming of a life change? This is a blog about what happens when, in the words of Yogi Berra, "you come to a fork in the road, [and] take it".

Tsunami Alert in the South Pacific: No Danger to New Caledonia

The tsunami that devastated the Solomon Islands today brought no damage to New Caledonia. On alert for two hours this morning, the tsunami crashed down on the Loyalty Islands - at 15 cm high, a "vaguelette" or "baby wave".

The public was fully alerted however and inhabitants made for higher ground. By 10:38 everyone was out of harm's way and by 11:15 the alert was over. Everyone could go home.

Julie, thank you again for your wonderful blog. This one about the tsunami warning is very thoughtful - our son, as I believe I told you, is living there in NC (as we call it). He is one of the young 'missionaires Mormones' whom you perhaps see around Noumea. Anyway, we're half a world away, wonder how he's doing and of course the tsunami raises worry. So many thanks for reassuring us. He has just this past two days been moved to Lifou, so again your words about the Loyalty Islands helped. Thanks - and also bonne anniversaire to your little son!

Lovely to hear from you, "mormhand". We have seen a few Mormon missionaries, here, yes and I often wonder how they manage in the heat (being so fully dressed). I am happy to have been able to reassure you about the tsunami. Do feel free to write if you have other concerns. And I do need to write about Lifou, which is a wonderful island (though yes, Internet is even more limited there). Your son must love it there!

All the best - Julie
