This blog on New Caledonia is for those of you who ever wondered what life on a tiny island in the South Pacific might be like. Tired of bracing winter winds, the stress of an inner city or simply dreaming of a life change? This is a blog about what happens when, in the words of Yogi Berra, "you come to a fork in the road, [and] take it".

New Caledonia's Top Blogs

Some weeks ago, New Caledonia's top blogs were named following an online survey conducted by a local blogger called "le mouton". 36 blogs were nominated by 29 Internet users. The top five winners, all Francophone, were:

  1. Margouillette - Life in New Caledonia told with a sense of humour and exquisite presentation.
  2. Calédosphère - A regularly updated smorgasbord of content on subjects as diverse as politics, New Caledonia, the Internet and love.
  3. 5 minutes en Nouvelle-Calédonie - A beautiful blog full of stunning photos, videos and sound.
  4. Le Cri du Cagou - A collective blog that blends techno with underground art and life in community.
  5. Katuali - Expats talk about daily life, good shopping, activities, etc.
For all 36 results, go to http://lemouton.canalblog.com/archives/2007/03/p40-0.html and scroll to "Et le Calédoblog d'Or revient à..."

Speaking of blogs, this little blog, "Sojourn in the South Pacific" will soon come to an end. We received official notice yesterday that we will indeed be returning to Paris on 21 August 2007 (via the States and the United Kingdom).

If any of you are looking for particular information about life in New Caledonia, do post a comment or send a note. Four more months ... let me know what you'd like to know.

I bet your heart sank when you typed in that second last paragraph?

Your blog was so useful to us when we were planning our trip to New Caledonia. I'm sure that if there were an English speaking section yours would have been mentioned!

Through it we; met you and your lovely family, experienced Noumea through the eyes of a local, lunched on your beautiful balcony, and met your special friends Anne and Melissa who have both stayed with us in Dunedin. Amazing what a little technology can accomplish.

I look forward a new blog? 'An American in Paris'? 'Pablo's Paris'? I’m sure you have plenty to share with us, and Laurent can continue to take his wonderful photographs.

Bonjour a tous,
Well great news Julie.
You and your family are back in Europe.
I know it is sad to leave.
But look on the positive side and moreover the experience of it all.
However it is a long way away.
So we will ask you to venture away and bring us the best of what you can see.
A bientot. Marc

Aaak! I cna't believe you are really leaving! I also can't believe it's been 2 years. Wow. I'm so sorry we never got to visit you in NC but I'm so glad Melis did. Yea!!! And we have such fond memories of the visits in Paris. What will Pablo do in such a different world?!
I too hope that you will create another, Parisian blog so we can keep up with you & the wonderful family. Please! Love to all!

Hi, Jo, Marc and Tiffany,

Thanks for all your kind words. Yes, my heart did sink making it official: that our sojourn will end. I do think about doing another blog - possibly yes "Pablo's Paris" (photos all shot from his perspective), but I would hate to add to all the "American in Paris" blogs there must be. Will have to find something original to do ...

In any case, I have loved being here and sharing bits and pieces of our lives here in "Caledonie". It has been a truly magical time in a heavenly place. I have met great people (Jo first and foremost! and Lucie and her family in the US and Marc in Liverpool - the list goes on) through this blog. I feel indeed blessed. We've had visits - both virtual and real (I'm missing Melissa today who left on a jet plane much to my dismay) and we've been able to share our little world.

My thanks go out to all of you.

Julie

Hello everyone,
Thank you for your kind words Julie.
The time is not up yet.
Let's make make the most of it.
Writing more often perhaps for me.
I am sure that you'll think of some subjects or places of interest.
They always are in your Posts.
